Our Story
The History
Coto stands on the Ronda road, between the two gates of La Zagaleta and facing El Madroñal,
a stretch of hillside that has looked out over the same view of the Mediterranean since long
before it had a name worth knowing.
The building itself dates to 1978, when it opened as Meson El Coto under a local Spanish
family and stayed in their hands for decades before passing to new ownership. In August
2018, the property and its land changed hands again, this time to the team behind what Coto

behind what Coto is today.
The Transition
What we inherited was a building in need of everything. Chef Patron Clive Rogers spent two years working alongside local architect Juan Salvador Shvartzberg before construction ever began, with one rule guiding every decision: the view comes first, the architecture serves it.
Atlas Group broke ground in October 2020, clearing away decades of unauthorised additions and reinforcing the original structure with a new steel frame beneath the old bones.
Built From
the Landscape
Every material choice took its cue from the hills around it — timber slats on the façade, floor-to-ceiling glass that erases the line between the dining room and the terrace, oversized porcelain at the bar, cork oaks left standing to shade the tables beneath them.
Nothing here is borrowed from anywhere else; it belongs to this hillside.
The Opening
